Comments: email October 2012Hi Henk !

One year ago, Tiama was entering the port of Bluff, early on a Saturday morning with a calm sea. After 10 days at sea. It was an amazing experience for both of us, which is, thanks a lot to you, Tiama and the rest of the crew, deep in our memories!

Since then we have had a few great sailing adventures. In February we left Auckland aboard MV Bahia Castillo, a 250m cargo ship, to Sydney! It made us understand the fear of the cargo ships for the captain of a sailing ship. And a few months later, still on our journey between New Zealand and France, we joined another ship, which you might have met before. Infinity, 120 feet, 2 masts, with a bright new red hull. 2 months of sailing in Borneo, and then across the South China See (!!!) to the east coast of Malaysia, Singapore, the west coast of Malaysia (Malacca Straight) and to Phuket. We had a great time. A lot of new learnings for us. And we both believe that the passage we did last year aboard Tiama taught us so much, to make this journey aboard Infinity even more special. Thanks again!

On this one-year anniversary of our entrance into Bluff port, we hope you and Tiama are both well!

All the best, Maud & Knut

Comments: A quick but very sincere thank you email.
I survived the crossing from Brest to South Wales in gale force winds (7 gusting 8 for 14 hours) and very high seas – not frightened at any time – concerned, yes,  but not frightened.I felt that if William (1st ex-husband) had had a heart attack I would have coped with the boat (maybe not the heart attack!) and would have had a sporting chance of getting back to land.I know I would not have had that confidence without your Tiama sailing school trip.SOThank you Henk.

Hi Henk,  I and Dave just wanted to thank you for a wonderful sailing experience, we both enjoyed are time spent on Tiama immensely we had a great time and learned so much, you are a great teacher and skipper. I personally had great fun steering and putting reefs in and out, the navigation bit was the hardest for me, I’m afraid I’m still not much better at it, I still tend to deliver sloppy work. Think that little job will end up being one of Dave’s task. He’s still much better at it than me, I’m much more handy at hoisting and trimming the sails, that much more fun.We have managed to take our little yacht out a couple of times now and it’s getting much easier and less stressful each time we venture out, we are planning to go away on her at christmas for a couple of weeks hopefully to the great barrier. Sailing sure is fun she might be a small 26ft yacht but she certainly sails well, we had her heeled right over one time and managed to get 6 knots out of her, not bad for a small yacht of her size.

Once again thank you for your patience in teaching us the skills need for sailing, we will be both going on to doing the yacht masters course at some point. Take care and happy sailing.

This was a rare opportunity to experience heavy weather sailing under the instruction of a very knowledgeable and experienced skipper in a boat designed and build for sailing in the high latitudes. The crew had levels of experience that varied  from day sailing to ocean passages, yet each of us had instruction up to our level of experience and I think all of us felt grateful that we were pushed that little bit further than we expected. We were all made to feel  that we had a useful and essential role to play on the trip. Our instructor Henk has just the right balance of patience, humor + persistence probing of our knowledge to keep us all on our toes. All in all an experience not to be missed if you are lucky enough to get booked onto one of Tiama’s coastal passages.

I want to thank you for the great opportunity I had.Describing the experience to Joao, with all the details, I started to realize how much I have learned at those 7 days. Now, I am starting to enter at Joao’s world. He is studying for his boat master’s test and I could actually sit and discuss some questions with him.

Sailing is a not only a new language, it is a new culture that I was not aware of. I want to thank you specially for respecting my time and my absentness after being so seasick. You were kind and really understanding and this was something that allowed me to slowly go back to the mood of the trip. You knew how hard it was for me and you empathized with me. I do not think I will have a problem to sail if I decide to. Anyway, our trip was an important start. Definitely not an end. Wishing you all the best,

Solange

Thank you for the excellent time I had on Tiama. Learnt heaps and really enjoyed myself. Thanks for sharing your gift of sailing with us – I found your style of teaching suited me well! I’m sorry I’m not a better student! Would be keen to do another course in the future. Have talked about the trip heaps at work so hopefully you’ll get some more business out of the rich anesthetists I work with! Especially impressed with the food – a floating woolworths if ever there was one! Found Tiama a very easy and comfortable boat to stay on. Still think that a swim around the boat every morning should be compulsory though (I did lead by example!!!). Kind regards,Fleur Bearda
